By starlight this eerie visage shines in the dark, a crooked profile evoking its popular name, the Witch Head Nebula.
In fact, this entrancing telescopic portrait gives the impression that the witch has fixed her gaze on Orion’s bright supergiant star Rigel.You can see the star of Rigel in the picture on the left
More formally known as IC 2118, the Witch Head Nebula spans about 50 light-years and is composed of interstellar dust grains reflecting Rigel’s starlight. The blue color of the Witch Head Nebula and of the dust surrounding Rigel is caused not only by Rigel’s intense blue starlight but because the dust grains scatter blue light more efficiently than red.
Rigel, the Witch Head Nebula, and gas and dust that surrounds them lie about 800 light-years away.

سحابی سر جادوگر
این نمای وهم آور که در تاریکی می درخشد ، نمایه ای کج و معوج نام محبوب خود ، سحابی سر جادوگر را تداعی می کند
در حقیقت ، این پرتره تلسکوپی جذاب ، این تصور را به وجود می آورد که جادوگر نگاهش را به ستاره فوق العاده غول پیکر ریگل معطوف کرده است. که در تصویر سمت چپ ستاره ریگل را می توانید ببینید
سحابی سر جادوگر که به طور رسمی با نام آی سی ۲۱۱۸ شناخته می شود ، از دانه های گرد و غبار بین ستاره ای منعکس کننده نور ستاره ریگل تشکیل شده است. رنگ آبی سحابی سر جادوگر و گرد و غبار اطراف ریگل نه تنها در اثر نور شدید ستاره آبی ریگل ایجاد می شود بلکه به دلیل اینکه دانه های گرد و غبار نور آبی را با کارآیی بیشتری نسبت به قرمز پخش می کنند
ریگل ، سحابی سر جادوگر و گاز و غباری که آنها را احاطه کرده است در حدود 800 سال نوری از ما فاصله دارند
